Dept Marketing Statement
Student Health Services (SHS) is a full service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to students on the UCSC campus.

SHS includes the following departments and sub units: Clinical Services including Laboratory and X-Ray; Retail Pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over the counter products; Patient Support Services; Student Insurance Programs; Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP) and the Condom Co-op; and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). SHS is supported by a combination of 20 funding sources and depends heavily on projected revenue from fees for support and employs approximately 120 staff including Physicians, Lab Scientists, Pharmacists, Nurses, Radiologists and other clinical and administrative staff.

Position Summary

Responsible for the day to day operational issues that arise in a health care clinic. Monitors the quality of care provided by physicians and professional health care staff. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Responsible for administration, budget, and clinic compliance with applicable laws or policy. Provides guidance to staff and managers according to established policies. Administers policies that affect clinic employees. Recommends changes to unit or sub-unit policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Manages priority setting and work flow analyses. Management reviews work to measure meeting of objectives.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information:   $97,500 - $125,500.



Salary commensurate with both the number of years licensed as a Clinical Nurse as well as applicable administrative skills, knowledge and abilities.

Job Duties
45% - Clinic Flow

Works with Student Health Services staff to maintain established workflows and clinic operations. Serves as an immediate resource to staff. Intervenes as necessary and reports to Clinic Director as applicable.

Ensures that staffing is efficiently coordinated across multiple service areas to meet fluctuating demands. Covers clinical areas as needed within scope.  

20% - Clinical Administration, Analysis, Strategic Planning 

Reviews clinic systems, practices and procedures periodically, and makes recommendations to assure continued compliance with current campus policies and external regulations. 

Reviews complex and urgent clinical cases.  Assists to determine the best utilization of resources internal or external to SHS and coordinates care.  

Develops and implements policies and procedures that ensure patient satisfaction, compliance with care delivery protocols, and support the operations of the clinic.

Plays a key role in campus disaster preparedness. Ensures that all clinical areas are in compliance with established specifications.

20% - Training and Safety 

Coordinates efforts in a collaborative manner to administer, organize, and conduct existing employee clinical training programs and assists in the development of new programs.

Assesses, maintains, and assures that safe processes are used in regard to health and safety practices within SHS. Involved with internal and external committees to support this endeavor.

15% - Materials Management 

Management of medical equipment and supplies.

Required Qualifications
  • Possession of a current State of California Nursing License, in good standing
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Solid knowledge and recent experience in clinic operations, including administration, protocols and procedures
  • Broad clinical skills in providing and supervising the appropriate medical care to patients
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, staff members, and other members of the medical community; Strong skills in discretion, tact, diplomacy, and flexibility
  • Strong working knowledge of clinical and operational issues in infection control, including policies, regulatory requirements, and patient care
  • Ability to independently research, analyze and resolve complex problems on a day to day basis
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving, planning and organizational skills relevant to addressing medical clinic needs through training programs, equipment use, and infection control practices
  • Strong sense of fiscal responsibility within a healthcare setting
  • Strong ability to multitask independently and set priorities which accurately reflect the importance of job responsibilities within demanding timeframes
