Job Summary: Supervise medical coding operations to ensure accurate and compliant coding of medical records for an organization that provides healthcare patient services. Oversee and train coding staff. Design, implement, and document coding policies and processes. Conduct audits and evaluate operations to identify opportunities for improvements. First-level leadership. Coordinates and leads daily team activities. May spend a portion of time performing the work of those they supervise. Assists with management decisions and activities. Working knowledge of team function within the organization.
Receives predetermined work assignments that are process driven and subject to a moderate level of control and review. Guides subordinates on a course of action based on knowledge of established policies and procedures. Provides input and contributes to managing costs related to a unit or sub-unit.
The starting salary for this position is $76,000 to $81,000/yr., depending on experience. Members of UMB are eligible for a bonus based on department performance. Employment is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and the adherence to departmental policies, including UMB's Telecommuting Agreement which requires a distraction-free and HIPAA compliant workplace, cameras on for all virtual calls/meetings, and the ability to work during office hours or assigned shift (M-F, approximately 8am to 5pm Mountain Time) regardless of what time zone you live in. Additionally, new hires are required to provide their own monitors (two) and reliable internet service.
Responsibilities
- Supervises Work 35%
- Train new hires to complete the workflow process for resolving work.
- Create and manage team schedule
- Prioritize activities, evaluate outcomes and recommend appropriate changes to the manager.
- Analyze team's work/throughput and report on activities to improve service utilization to ensure meeting key performance targets.
- Respond to inquiries and support resolution
- Supervises Team 35%
- Monitor employee productivity
- Manage employee performance, conduct annual assessments, support individual learning and development objectives
- Oversee timecards, time-off requests, and other related items
- Coding Knowledge/Information Dissemination 30%
- Identify, research, and resolve problems and complaints.
- Assess and research coding related databases to obtain coding and billing guidelines.
- Facilitate internal and external meetings.
- Communicate information regarding provider concerns/reviews to coding staff.
- Complete ad hoc related duties as assigned; meet performance standards and key performance expectations of position.
Minimum Qualifications
Position requires American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) recognized certification such as: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Professional Coder-Payor (CPC-P), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS- P), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or other specialty certification indicated by the department. Departments may prefer specific certifications over others.
Three years coding, clinical or billing experience and three years of progressively responsible supervisory experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
Demonstrated knowledge of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory and reimbursement rules and regulations, reimbursement systems (federal, state and payer specific), and health insurance processing is required. Proficiency with computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and effective human relations and communication skills are also required. Some areas may require knowledge of CMS, AMA and AHA coding and billing guidelines.
Incumbents in this position must maintain their Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) as required by the issuing coding organization.

Preferences
- 3 years of coding, clinical, or billing experience with documentation requirements related to regulatory reimbursement rules, regulations, reimbursement systems (federal, state and payer specific), and health insurance processing is required.
- AAPC, AHIMA certification
- 2 years' experience providing indirect leadership, project management or mentor-type support to others.
- Proficiency in Outlook365
- Proven experience working in a remote environment
