Lead Clinic Physician
Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (JHU SHWB) is seeking a Lead Clinic Physician (LP) who will report to the Chief Medical Director of JHU SHWB and will be responsible for providing direct patient care with a significant emphasis on health maintenance, preventative measures, and health education to a diverse student population of over 13,000 undergraduates, graduates, post-docs, and clinical trainees. The LP will split their time between multiple sites, including the Homewood campus and the East Baltimore campus as well help coordinate future services in Washington DC. In addition to clinical practice, the LP will serve as a member of the primary care executive committee. This involves providing clinical leadership, facilitating credentialing and privileging for providers, monitoring peer reviews, and ensuring that the clinic meets accreditation standards.

The LP will serve as the direct supervisor for all primary care physicians within JHU SHWB, and as a consultant for other clinical providers. The LP will guide and determine the schedule for an ongoing internal education process for clinicians, nurses and other health center staff. The academic setting of the position also allows the physician to work more broadly on population health issues, and opportunities to keep the clinic on the forefront of best practices in the student health field. The LP advises the Director on clinical matters, policies affecting patient care and current practices, and consults with SHWB providers on difficult clinical problems. The LP represents the clinical staff in the development of written policies and procedures, acts as a liaison between the physicians, staff and the Director, reviews Incident Reports after evaluation by the Director if deemed necessary, and serves on special committees as assigned.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Clinical care of patients, including but not limited to: direct patient care, outreach / preventive health efforts, and follow-up of labs, radiological / other studies, and referrals.
  • Direct supervision of other primary care physicians within SHWB, this currently includes 3 full-time physicians, 1 casual physician, and 4 faculty members with limited clinical hours.
  • Lead a practice that emphasizes culturally inclusive and gender affirming care which includes the evaluation of current practices and ongoing training and development of staff.
  • Provide medical consultations as needed to SHWB providers and assist in orienting and precepting new clinicians, and residents/fellows who are rotating through the clinic.
  • Perform monthly peer chart reviews and pass periodic laboratory proficiency testing and quality control reviews.
  • Perform assigned responsibilities for the Director when they are absent.
  • Provide back-up on-call phone services to SHWB patients either when the on-call coverage provider is absent or in rotation with other SHWB providers.
  • Lead SHWB educational and accreditation programs and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in continuing medical educational programs. Supervise accreditation-related projects, including but not limited to policies, meetings, and studies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an ACGME-approved residency program and board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Med / Peds, or Pediatrics.
  • Unrestricted license or eligible for unrestricted licensure to practice medicine in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia
  • Active or eligible for DEA, and Maryland and District of Columbia Controlled Drug Substances registrations.
  • Credentialing and privileging through Johns Hopkins Hospital and SHWB.
  • Occupational health clearance including medical history, immunizations, and drug screen.
  • Proven ability to relate effectively to people of various ages and backgrounds including gender and sexual orientation as well as cultural, ethnic, and international differences.
  • Considerable experience working with under-represented and historically marginalized communities in removing barriers for access to care.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in young adult health, public health, or college health. Healthcare leadership skills and three to five years' experience working in a college health setting highly desirable. Philosophical commitment to the care, development, and education of students and trainees.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
