Position Announcement

Under direction of the Director of Mental Health Services the Therapist IV has the ability and expertise to provide culturally responsive diagnosis and treatment for learning, intellectual, psychological and social disorders and will provide psychological clinical case management; conduct individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; and provide consultation to other programs and agencies on treatment needs and behavioral plans. Additionally, the Therapist IV has advanced practice expertise or certification in an area of clinical significance and can provide specialized service to UVU students or enhance SHS. This position has a special focus on LGBTQ+ mental health and wellness. Coordinates this service or specialization.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Administer culturally responsive psychotherapy to a broad and diverse UVU student population for cognitive, substance, psychotic, mood, anxiety, dissociative, sexual, sleep, adjustment, personality and other psychological disorders. Analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions within the scope of their responsibilities. Assess client's emotional, intellectual, and personality functioning to assist them in their individual needs by utilizing clinical interview methods, objective testing instruments, and clinical expertise. Provide diagnosis if applicable according to the DSM-V.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Mental Health Services, coordinates administrative and operational activities for the service program or population, implemented for the mental health of UVU students. Attends conferences, workshops, and consults with the literature to keep current on effective program, assessment, and psychotherapy methods. Maintains certification and/or keeps current on the theory and practice of an area of specialization.
  • Write and record accurate confidential record of client's condition, treatment plan, and progress towards recovery and treatment goals.
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments utilizing evidence-based practice; provide intake, triage, and crisis intervention with clients who are experiencing acute behavioral and/or emotional crisis. Manage complex and high-risk clients and provide emergency on call and after hour services as assigned.
  • Responsible to supervise and provide training for therapy trainees who provide a wide range of psychological, critical, and case management services for UVU students. Perform other job related duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications


  • Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters or Doctorate in the Mental Health field (i.e. Psychology, Social work, Marriage and Family Therapy or Counseling) and three years of full-time experience in higher education counseling or clinical setting.
  • Meets the requirements of a Training Supervisor as required by the State of Utah.
  • Possesses an advanced practice specialization, certification, or doctoral degree relevant to the field of mental health.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PHD or PSYD in Social Work, Psychology, counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy.

Licenses or Certifications
  • Licensed for the practice of psychotherapy as a Psychologist, or Certified Mental Health Counselor, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Marriage and Family Therapist.
  • Certification in a specialized area of clinical service.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge about psychological theories, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the therapeutic professions.
  • Knowledge of essential principles of psychology, human behavior, counseling and psychotherapy.
  • Knowledge of individual, group, and crisis intervention counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of treatment plan development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources.
  • Knowledge of psychodiagnostic and psychiatric diagnosis based on DSM-V.
  • Knowledge of and participation in consulting techniques, public speaking, teaching, and presentations.
  • Knowledge of psychological tests, effective clinical interviewing, and other assessment tools that are utilized to diagnose mental and learning disorders according to the DSM-V.
  • Basic knowledge of psychopharmacology.
  • Knowledge of Title IX procedures and campus resources.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical supervision.
  • Knowledge of applying current research and evidence based strategies in a specific field of expertise or specialty.

  • Ability to recommend voluntary and/or involuntary commitment of clients for hospitalization for clients who present a serious threat of harm either to themselves or others.
  • Ability to provide suicide risk assessments using evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to diagnose psychological disorders based on the DSM-V.
  • Ability to keep accurate and precise treatment records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to be compliant with HIPAA and FERPA privacy laws.
  • Ability to be compliant with ethical standards established within the therapeutic professions.
  • Ability to provide supervision to therapists in training according to best practices for psychotherapeutic care.
  • Ability to be flexible and creative in coordinating UVU Mental Health Services programs in which a specialty exists.
