Job Description
The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking applications for a Staff Nurse, RN with a State of Tennessee medical license to provide outpatient primary healthcare support in an ambulatory clinic setting for the eligible student population of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus.

The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking applications for a full-time Staff Nurse, R.N. to perform direct patient care medical services as a member of a physician-directed health care team specializing in adult primary care. The incumbent will work interdependently, independently, and dependently as a member of a health care team. Duties will be carried out with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action in accordance with established standards and ethics of the medical profession, personal clinical qualifications, and the administrative policies and operational procedures of the Student Health Services.


Responsibilities
  • Provision of direct patient care duties including the assessment of the patient to determine reason for the visit and symptoms the patient is experiencing.
  • Initiates nursing preliminary treatment plan by providing assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and formulates a plan of care basd on initial assessment.
  • Anticipates the Physician's or Nurse Practitioner's needs based on findings.
  • Performs nursing procedures as indicated based on skill level and or assists the medical provider with examinations, procedures, and treatments as needed.
  • Ensures necessary equipment and supplies are available for the medical provider.
  • Obtains consent forms when indicated.
  • Serves as a chaperone when indicated.
  • Obtains lab results, informs medical provider when results are available.
  • Administers medication as ordered by the medical provider.
  • Performs blood draws and laboratory testing as ordered by the medical provider.
  • Other duties such as:
    • participation in assigned committees and SHC staff meetings;
    • Makes appropriate entries into the patient's medical record;
    • Assists with emergency medical situations;
    • Schedules appointments with consultants as indicated;
    • Performs follow-up of all referrals;
    • Works in all patient care areas with the Student Health Center as the need arises;
    • Advise patients regarding questions/concerns based on nursing judgement, and/or established medical providers routines/instructions;
    • Reinforces and clarifies medical provider instructions as needed;
    • Expedites appropriate charges as indicated and advises patients of expenses for which they are financially responsible.
    • Checks medical records to ascertain completed diagnostic reports are present, forwards report to medical provider for review/follow-up and closure of medical record.
    • Scans medical records, health history, insurance documents as needed.
    • Contacts all patients after all in-office procedures.
    • Obtains medical insurance prior authorizations for referrals to specialists and/or performance of special testing.
    • Educates, teaches, and trains patients as needed.
  • Other indirect patient care duties include:
    1. Restocks and maintain supplies in patient care area including supply closets and exam rooms.
    2. Prepare exam rooms including the utilization of disinfectants on surfaces to ensure infection control between each patient.
    3. Prepares soiled instruments/equipment for pick up by housekeeping staff for sterile processing.
    4. Copies of patient education materials as needed.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Associate's degree in Nursing and a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and licensed registered nurse with a medical license issued by the State of Tennessee.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years of clinical primary care experience in a hospital or physician's office. Must have a minimum of two years' experience working within an electronic medical record system.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Must have the skills and knowledge to work within a Microsoft office products; Must have the knowledge of basic human anatomy; Must have the knowledge of nursing license limitations; Must have the skills and ability to practice infection control methods in a health care facility; Ability to type and utilize a windows based computer system. Ability to administer injections, and draw blood. Must have basic knowledge, skill and ability to maintain medical records information with strict confidentiality. Must have basic knowledge of medical coding including CPT and ICD-10 diagnosis codes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing and a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Experience: Experience in a college health facility; Experience with the Student Health Center medical records software program "Medicat".
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to speak multiple languages; Extensive knowledge and skill with medical documentation and coding requirements. Knowledge of AAAHC accreditation standards, and previous experience with the electronic health record program called Medicat. Must have abilities to handle allergic reactions and emergency medical situations.

The Student Health Center is a department of the Division of Student Life within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Our mission is to provide primary care in an ambulatory setting to ensure that eligible VOL students maintain healthy medical outcomes to allow them to pursue and meet their educational goals. If a student becomes ill, we want to assess their symptoms and determine how we may assist and return them to health again. Student Health is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Every Wednesday our hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are a full-service ambulatory clinic which offers medical exams, onsite laboratory testing, radiological services, physical therapy, immunizations, psychiatric care, and pharmacy services.
