This grant-funded position will be an employee of Norwalk Community College but will work at CSCU System Office in Hartford to facilitate grant work. The position may also require the incumbent to travel to colleges within the CSCU system.

Position Summary:
The Healthcare Career Advisor manages and implements a comprehensive outreach and advisement program to assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to better prepare themselves for higher education programs in the health profession. The programs provide opportunities for a broad range of students seeking entry level health careers certifications and training. These students may include individuals who lack basic skills and knowledge that can reduce their chances for success. The Healthcare Career Advisor provides advising to students/clients at the colleges served by the CT SHIP grant. This position would also collect and report on student outcomes in areas of completion, work-based learning, employment, etc.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Example of Job Duties:
The Healthcare Career Advisor works under the direction of the Project Director of the CT Statewide Healthcare Industry Pathways (CT SHIP) project and is an employee of Norwalk Community College. The Healthcare Career Advisor is responsible for providing advising (includes communications with the 5 consortium colleges) as needed to students at the colleges served by the CT SHIP grant, to assist them in attaining achievement commensurate with their capabilities through effective performance in these essential functional areas:

  • Academic and Career Advising
  • Retention and Holistic Supports
  • Advising Program Development
  • Reporting

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with two (2) or more years of related experience; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position's essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:

  • Familiarity of entry level healthcare professions and the healthcare industry in Connecticut.
  • Familiarity with programs and strategies to support first-generation, low-income, nontraditional, and minoritized students.
  • Familiarity with the community college environment and its student population.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and independently manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to solve problems.
  • Experience providing high quality and equitable customer service.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting students in academic goal setting and career planning.
  • Two (2) years of experience in advising or case management.
  • Experience using video conferencing software for virtual meetings.
Starting Salary:
$66,949 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits. This Grant Funded position has the potential of renewal through January 31, 2025.
